Most important takeaways…
- Yale announced direct-entry MN and GEPN-DNP programs in September 2026.
- The three-year GEPN-DNP combines RN preparation, NP or nurse-midwifery specialty, and DNP.
- Yale's 16-month MN prepares RNs only, not nurse practitioners.
A bachelor's degree outside nursing is now a legitimate starting point for graduate entry into RN and APRN roles through direct entry MSN nurse practitioner programs. On September 25, 2026, Yale School of Nursing announced two new direct-entry programs: a 16-month Master of Nursing starting Spring 2027 with 40 planned students, and a three-year GEPN-DNP starting Fall 2027 with 30 planned students.
Yale's existing GEPN-to-MSN pathway continues, so adult-gerontology NP candidates now weigh the difference between MSN and DNP as they compare a master's route with a doctoral direct-entry route across different timelines, costs, and licensure implications. The MN builds RN-level competence only, while the GEPN-DNP compresses RN preparation, NP specialty training, and DNP work into one continuous pathway.
Yale's Three Direct-Entry Routes Compared: MN, GEPN-MSN and GEPN-DNP
Yale now has three direct-entry nursing routes, but only two set students up for nurse practitioner or nurse-midwifery practice after RN licensure.
Master of Nursing (MN): Fastest, But Not Advanced Practice
The new Master of Nursing is a 16-month, full-time residential program starting in Spring 2027. It prepares students for registered nursing only, not NP or nurse-midwifery certification. Yale has not stated a required clinical-hour total for the MN; the program includes graduate coursework, simulation, lab learning, and clinical practice across four terms.
GEPN-MSN: The Established Master's Specialty Route
Yale continues its existing GEPN-to-MSN pathway, Direct-Entry MSN for Nurse Practitioners, alongside the new programs. This full-time route runs about three years and awards the Master of Science in Nursing: year one is the GEPN prelicensure phase, and years two and three are an advanced-practice master's specialty. The MSN specialties include Adult-Gerontology Primary Care and Adult-Gerontology Acute Care, Family, Nurse Midwifery, Pediatric Primary Care and Acute Care, Psychiatric-Mental Health, and Women's Health. Total clinical hours are not stated as one figure for the whole route and vary by specialty. As a reference point, the Adult-Gerontology Acute Care MSN lists 720 placement hours and at least 856 total clinical hours with preceptors. Yale has not published a separate 2026 start date for the continuing GEPN-MSN option.
GEPN-DNP: The Continuous Three-Year Doctoral Path
The new GEPN-DNP program is also three years, full time, with the first cohort starting in Fall 2027. Students complete RN preparation, then continue directly into a selected nurse practitioner or nurse-midwifery specialty and finish with a DNP degree. Yale has confirmed the pathway continues into advanced practice, but a complete specialty-by-specialty list for the GEPN-DNP has not been published. Total DNP clinical hour requirements are also not yet specified in available materials.
RN First, Specialty Second: How Licensure Works After a Direct-Entry Program
Direct-entry nursing has two stages: earn your RN first through direct entry NP programs, then build your advanced practice role. Yale's new programs split those stages differently.
Two phases, not one
Both new programs start with RN preparation. The Master of Nursing (MN) is the accelerated 16-month phase only: graduate coursework, simulation, lab learning, and clinical practice. It prepares students for NCLEX-RN licensure, but it does not make them nurse practitioners. The Graduate Entry Prespecialty in Nursing to Doctor of Nursing Practice (GEPN-DNP) compresses the same RN preparation into a three-year pathway that continues into a nurse practitioner or nurse-midwifery specialty and the DNP.
After the MN: what it takes to become an NP
An MN graduate's first milestone is passing the NCLEX-RN through Pearson VUE registration with a state board of nursing. To practice as an NP, you then need to move from RN to NP through a graduate-level APRN program aligned with your target role and population, such as a post-master's APRN certificate or DNP specialty program. Many APRN programs prefer or require one to two years of nursing experience, so some MN graduates work as RNs before continuing.
Licensure is not one credential
NCLEX-RN grants RN licensure. Becoming an APRN is separate: complete an accredited graduate APRN program, earn national board certification (such as ANCC adult-gerontology exams), then apply for APRN licensure in the state where you will practice. Requirements vary by state, including outside Connecticut, so check your own state board before choosing a pathway.
What Yale's Direct-Entry Programs Cost and Where to Verify It
Choosing Yale means weighing a premium price against a compressed path to licensure, and the new MN and GEPN-DNP shift that math in different ways for direct entry NP programs for career changers.
2026-2027 GEPN-MSN benchmark
For the existing GEPN-MSN, Yale publishes 2026-2027 tuition of $75,888. The equipment and technology fee is $2,358, the lab fee $536, and the student activities fee $140; total required fees bring the official total to $78,992 before living costs. Term tuition is $27,168 for fall, $27,168 for spring, and $21,552 for summer. A $600 nonrefundable deposit reserves a seat, with $300 credited to fall tuition.
New MN and GEPN-DNP: wait for Yale
Yale has not yet published separate 2026-2027 or 2027-2028 cost pages for the new Master of Nursing or GEPN-DNP. One third-party site lists $54,336 annual tuition and $57,370 in first-year tuition and mandatory fees for the MN for 2026-2027; Yale's own general MSN tuition is $54,335, so the $54,336 does not match that figure and is not labeled as the new MN. Treat that as a reported figure, not an official MN price.
Why totals are not apples to apples
The MN is 16 months, the GEPN-MSN runs through summer terms, and the GEPN-DNP is three years, so even similar per-term rates produce different total bills. Third-party comparisons often mix tuition, fees, living costs, and DNP program length. To verify, check Yale School of Nursing's tuition and fees schedule and the program-specific cost of attendance page, and contact the financial aid office for the new MN and GEPN-DNP once 2027 figures post.
Application Checklist for Spring 2026 and Fall 2026 Entry
- Bachelor’s degreeYou need a bachelor’s degree in another field and no prior nursing background.
- PrerequisitesComplete four courses with lab, A&P I and II, General Chemistry, and Microbiology, each with a B (3.0) or higher within eight years. AP credit does not count. At least two prerequisites are due by the application deadline; the rest are due by August 15 before starting.
- GREYale’s GRE policy is conditional on GPA. If your cumulative GPA is below 3.0 (as calculated by NursingCAS), submit GRE scores at or above the 50th percentile in each section from the past five years. Confirm current policy, as Yale sources differ.
- Recommendations and statementSubmit three recommendation letters and a personal statement through NursingCAS.
- DeadlinesThe published GEPN deadline is November 1. Yale has not yet confirmed separate deadlines for the Spring 2027 MN or Fall 2027 GEPN-DNP cohorts; verify on the admissions portal.
