Illinois APRN Licensure: Steps After Graduation
Once you complete an accredited NP program, Illinois offers a clear pathway to practice. You will need to pass a national certification exam (ANCC or AANP), then apply online through the Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation (IDFPR) for your APRN license. A current Illinois RN license and a background check are also required. Illinois now offers two license types: a standard APRN license, which requires a written collaborative agreement with a physician for prescriptive authority, and a Full Practice Authority (FPA) license, which grants independent prescriptive authority without a collaborative agreement. The FPA pathway has been available since recent legislative updates, giving qualified NPs greater autonomy. After licensure, you must renew every two years by the June 30 deadline, completing 80 continuing education hours per cycle. Of those, at least 50 must come from accredited providers, at least 20 must cover pharmacotherapeutics, and 10 must address opioid prescribing. Specific hours for controlled substance prescribing, cultural competency, and Alzheimer's and dementia care are also required. New graduates are exempt from CE requirements for their first renewal cycle. If you plan to prescribe controlled substances, you will also need a separate Illinois controlled substance license and DEA registration.
